nature programs and guided eco-excursions to
our clients. Whether it is hiking to spectacular rapids
on the Spanish River, cycling to cascading waterfalls on
Pumphouse Creek, climbing towering bluffs on Fox Lake or exploring
one of many fascinating wetlands, Fox Lake lodge will
give you the opportunity to learn about and experience
the wonders of nature in Northern Ontario.

The Ladders'
Trail
(Hiking & Biking - Novice)
- This scenic 2 hour
(return) bike and hike to the spectacular Ladder
waterfall will be the highlight of your
trip. An ideal spot for a picnic and a must-see for
all!
The Elbow
(Hiking or Biking - Novice)
- A leisure 30-45 min cycle
(or 1.5 hour hike) one-way from the lodge to the historic Elbow of the
Spanish River (once a prosperous logging town of the not-so-long-ago).
This great excursion also offers a unique option for the way back to the
lodge - a trail which will take you into the Spanish River forest and back
to Fox Lake. We recommend a morning or afternoon if hiking.
Maple Bush
Trail
(Hiking - Novice)
- Once a fully operational
commercial maple sugar bush, this beautifully
sheltered, primarily deciduous forest
is a rare occurrence on the edge of the boreal
forest region. Mature sugar maple, yellow
birch and white birch form this attractive 1-3 hour (pending how far
you go) hike. It is especially spectacular in the fall.
Graveyards
Hiking Trail
(Hiking - Intermediate)
- This rugged yet scenic
full day hiking trail follows the Spanish River from the
Elbow to the famous Graveyards Rapids. Logging
history is particularly rich in the area along
this trail.
Spanish
Lake Trail
(Biking - Intermediate)
- Ideal for hiking
or mountain biking, this scenic 27 km (return)
trail travels through some of the Spanish Forest's
ancient pine forests, creek beds and rugged terrain.
Fox Lake
Loop Trail
(Biking - Intermediate)
- This 26 km loop along
a former logging road takes participants right
around the lake. It is a great day trip for
mountain biking.
The Bluffs
(Canoe & Hiking - Advanced)
- Located at the south
end of Fox Lake, a half-hour climb up the bluffs
will reward you with an incredible view
of the area. Ospreys are commonly spotted
in this area. Because it is the site of a historical
fire, it is also an excellent spot to pick blueberries
- a Northern Ontario favorite.
Cedar Rapids
(Biking - Advanced)
- 34 km return trip
through washouts, blow-downs and creek beds (and some jumps at your discretion)
- this ride to Cedar Rapids is technical , beautiful and a rewarding trip
for anyone who loves the outdoors and enjoys a good challenging ride.

Ratings
Novice - Easily navigable, fairly flat surface, reasonably
short in distance and does not require a high fitness level
Intermediate - Requires knowledge of direction and some dependency
on map reading, distance may be long however reasonably leisure. Creek
crossing and blow-downs are possible. You should be in good health and prepared
with a First Aid kit
in case of falls
Advanced - Must have understanding of direction and good map
reading skills. In excellent health, prepared for falls and decisions which
involve risk to your safety. An interpreter from Fox Lake is highly recommended,
a compass or GPS and First Aid kit
would be seen as essential
